Chapter 7

The next day I received a message before breakfast—Juan Miguel was inviting me to his office at Salinger Bank. Angelina wasn't surprised by this news and only advised that I keep calm and make the most of the opportunity to learn. Maria would come with me, and although she wouldn't join the meeting itself, she would make sure I didn't get lost in the city and would help me to introduce myself at the bank, seeing as I didn't speak the language.

At the appointed time, we introduced ourselves and she asked to see Juan Miguel, displaying the invitation I had received. When a secretary came to get me, Maria said goodbye with a smile and wished me luck. Before she left, she explained to the man that I didn't speak English, but he replied and said in decent Spanish—albeit with a strong Italian accent—that it wouldn't be an issue.

The man led me up three flights of stairs. I could see many offices on each floor, yet despite being a huge building, there was a sense of calm that differed greatly from what I was used to in the Argentinian and Spanish banks I'd visited. At last, we came to a meeting room. The man opened the door and politely asked me to enter. Juan Miguel was waiting inside, dressed impeccably in a three piece suit. He was with a man who was younger than him; around thirty-five or forty. He was slim, with fairly long and dark hair—quite unusual for a banker. He was also wearing a high-quality, perfectly tailored suit. He smiled kindly when he saw me enter the room.

"Welcome, Mr. Roca, I am Carlo Salinger. Thanks for visiting us here today." Juan Miguel also came over to greet me and the three of us sat around a small table on some comfy leather armchairs. The secretary who had escorted me here served coffee and then left the room. Carlo was the first to speak.

"Juan Miguel has briefly informed me about you and your experience in Buenos Aires, as well as the success of your financial business in Spain. He also told me of your recent departure and how fortunate this moment is."

"More than fortunate—I would say it was a calculated decision, one motivated by well-researched reasons that were also verified in Buenos Aires." Juan Miguel spoke in a friendly tone, but he didn't smile as much as he had the night before—in fact, he looked rather pensive.

"Pardon me, Marco, if I express myself poorly—my Spanish isn't as good as I would like it to be," Carlo noted, clearly annoyed at himself. "Thanks for the clarification Juan, we both agree that you have acted in a professional manner and that you possess a keen nose for finances; despite your limited experience in the banking sector in particular, your knowledge of business is sound."

I smiled, thanking him with a nod of the head. Salinger continued:

"Juan Miguel has also told me that you have excellent connections with spheres of power
